On Mac: export a JPEG copy
- Open the HEIC image in Preview.
- Choose File → Export.
- Select JPEG from the Format menu and adjust quality if offered.
- Choose a destination and save the copy. Keep the original HEIC until you have checked it.
On iPhone: use Preview where available
- Save or locate the image in Files, then open it in Preview. These instructions apply to iPhones with the Preview app; older software has different menus.
- Tap the actions menu beside the filename, then choose Export.
- Choose JPEG and save the exported copy. Review its size and appearance before sharing.
Use ConvertFern on either device
- Open HEIC to JPG in your browser.
- Choose files from your device. The photo picker may provide a compatible copy rather than the original HEIC; choosing a saved original from Files gives you more control.
- Select quality and Convert files. Download the JPG.
- On iPhone, look in your browser downloads or the Files app. If the result opens in a viewer, use Share to save it to Files.
Take future iPhone photos as JPEG
On supported iPhones, go to Settings → Camera → Formats and select Most Compatible. This changes future captures; it does not convert the photos already in your library. Some camera modes require High Efficiency.
Troubleshooting and other destinations
If the photo is only in iCloud, allow it to download before converting. A failed batch may work as individual files. Missing motion or changes in HDR appearance are expected limitations of exporting a still JPEG.
Use HEIC to PNG if you need PNG output. For a document, a device’s direct PDF export avoids an intermediate JPEG. ConvertFern also offers HEIC → JPG → PDF when that trade-off is acceptable.
Frequently asked questions
Does Most Compatible change my existing photos?
No. Convert existing photos separately.
Why does the picker give me a JPG already?
Your operating system or sharing method can provide a compatibility copy. Check the selected filename; if it is already JPG, another HEIC conversion is unnecessary.
